The flag was adopted in the year 1915.
The red colour represents the blood spilled by the indipendentists.
In the center of the red field a green five-pointed star recalls Islam, the country's official religion.
The star represents wisdom, peace, health and life, while the five points symbolize the five "Pillars" of Islam, i.e.the testimony of faith (shahada), prayer (salat), almsgiving (zakat), fasting (sawm) and pilgrimage (hajj).
