The National Anthem was written in the wake of nationalism during 1956-57 and become the national anthem in 1965 upon independence from Malaysia.
Zubir Said, wrote it on the basis of the national motto, "Majulah Singapura" or "Onward Singapore".
Although Singapore has 4 official languages, the anthem is only to be sung in the original Malay lyrics.
